Mutes sample videos

A few people have asked about the videos that are included with mute. The vast majority (25 in fact) were shot and edited by Josh Smith. Contributions from Halvor Grinnes make up the rest. In time we hope to create a space on mutevj.com for people to easily share content.

Adobe Apollo

Early on in the development process software such as mProjector and Screenweaver were examined. These applications help integrate projector files into the native OS, as well as doing a few rather nice tricks. Unfortunately the effect on performance and questionable cross compatibility, discounted their use.
Apollo is Adobe's answer to bringing Flash to the desktop. While still in alpha, its feature list is shaping up nicely. Adobe promises Apollo will work seamlessly on Windows, OSX and Linux. This is something we will be following closely and considered porting mute over to.

Actionscirpt 3.0

The latest version of Actionscript holds some promising improvements which will no doubt benefit future versions of mute. Apart from a speed boost (which is always welcome) the new SoundMixer method stands out as a potentially great addition. This new function reads audio data at runtime allowing for the creation of audio-driven animations.

For the first time (with Flash) it is possible to visually display the waveform of sound. The flash blog has some great examples of the functionality. I will be posting some of my own experiments with the new method shorty.

DS VJ

I came across a rather nifty home-brew VJ application for the Nintendo DS called ndsvisuals. You can See it in action (Quicktime, 21mb) and check out the ndsvisulals website for more infomation.

The creator explains how it works:

"ndsvisuals is a system designed to loosen VJs from their stationary input devices, by equipping them with a wireless remote control - more precisely: a nintendoDS gaming console. By using all the features the nintendoDS provides (such as two screens, a touchscreen, wirless networking, ...) it enables VJs to control their visual performance from wherever they have a WLAN-connection to their notebook"

Sounds good to me.

So Mute has finally got a home! Many thanks to all the people who have already downloaded a copy. Everyone's suggestions have been noted and will be consulted during the development of the next version. The current version of Mute can be considered an early Beta release although, many people have reported that the software is very usable and stable.

This website is still a "work in progress" so please excuse the mess. Plans include a support forum, mailing list and a detailed roadmap.

If you have any questions/suggestions or if you are a developer interested in working on the project, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
